Denver skiing

Snowy Fun

For those who ski Colorado is one of the ultimate destinations as the state is known for its world class ski resorts. Just a short drive from the city of Denver are Loveland, Eldora, and Winter Park, all incredible ski destinations, perfect for a weekend escape to Denver. But for those people who aren’t into the thrills and sometime spills of skiing there are a number of other winter activities available in Denver for everyone to enjoy. Try your hand at cross country skiing or snowshoeing and explore Mother Nature’s beautiful canvas. Rent a snowmobile and opt for excitement over exercise as you whiz through the mountains. For those seeking a bit of romance during their weekend trip to Denver a sleigh ride or ice skating always warms the heart. For families a more exciting or unusual adventure like sledding, tubing or even dog sledding can help create a treasured memory. And if the cold doesn’t bother you then you may want to try your hand at ice fishing or ice climbing. There are so many cool winter activities to enjoy in the Denver area that it’s almost impossible to pack them all into one weekend getaway.

Mile High Stadium

Sports Fans

For those people who love sports but would rather watch them than participate Denver has four professional sports teams that can keep your yen for sports satiated. The Denver Broncos are the region’s professional football team. The Broncos play at Mile High Stadium which is now known as Invesco Field at Mile High. The stadium is known for its sell out games so if you’d like to catch a game then you’ll want to get your tickets in advance of your weekend getaway to Denver. The Denver Nuggets are the local professional basketball team and their home games are played at Pepsi Center. The Pepsi Center is also home to the Denver Avalanche the area’s ice hockey team. And for baseball fans, the Colorado Rockies bring their brand of excitement to Coors Field.

Denver Art Museum

Museums and Art

For a change of pace, Denver offers a significant number of cultural activities for visitors and locals alike. The Denver Art Museum is most known for its collection of American Indian artwork but the rest of the museum is equally impressive with more than 68,000 works of art to enlighten, entertain and inspire visitors. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is the area’s leading resource for informal science education, their huge variety of exhibitions, programs and activities bring science to life. If you’re interested specifically in regional history then the Colorado Historical Society is a wonderful place go visit and learn about the colorful history that makes Denver what it is today. Aviation fans will love Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum who is honoring noted celebrity and pilot Harrison Ford in November 2009 and capping the celebration with a tribute to aviation in the movies. Denver also has a couple of unique museums that are particularly interesting, the Denver Firefighters Museum is one of those destinations with its focus on local heroes and interactive exhibits. Another museum that you won’t find anywhere is the Molly Brown House Museum, known for her puckish nature and the fact that she survived the Titanic, Molly Brown has become somewhat of an American icon. Molly Brown’s old home was saved from destruction and lovingly restored and transformed into a museum that accurately depicts life as it was during her stay there.

Weekend with the Kids

If you’re planning a weekend getaway to Denver with your family then there are a great number of things you can do together that everyone will enjoy. The outdoor activities in Denver are world class, especially during the winter months with skating, skiing, sledding, and snowboarding like nowhere else in the United States. The Denver Children’s Museum is a great stop for families with younger children. The museum is dedicated to children up through age eight and their adult companions. The museum brings dynamic hands on exhibits to life to encourage interest in the large and small aspects of the world around them. For animal lovers there are a number of options in Denver, the Denver Zoo is one of the most popular ones in the country and the Downtown Aquarium Denver is newly renovated to feature more “natural” habitats and hands on activities. For a different look at nature the Denver Botanic Gardens are an inspiration for a number of reasons. This garden was originally the dream of local gardeners who wanted to keep part of their booming city in a natural state. Today the Denver Botanic Gardens has expanded to three different sites, the Denver Botanic Gardens, the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield and Mount goliath, each one celebrates the varied ecosystems of the state of Colorado.

Shopping, Dining, Entertainment

Finally, one area that every visitor to Denver should explore is the 16th Street Mall. Not your traditional mall by any sense of the word, the 16th Street Mall is an entire street that stretches for 16 blocks full of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. This is the perfect place to wander about if you have some free time you’d like to fill as there is always something interesting going on and a delectable restaurant to tempt your taste buds. It’s also the perfect place to stop for that souvenir from your visit to Denver. You’ll find the typical junky tourist shop with Davy Crockett coonskin hats and authentic replicas of Native American artifacts, but there are also a handful of quality stores featuring local artists and craftsmen with stunning products you can’t find anywhere else.
