No trip to Mexico would be complete without soaking up sun and playing in the refreshing waters of Baja. Most travelers will find that Baja, Mexico offers a variety of beaches, islands, and bays to meet almost any aquatic need. You can take full advantage of Baja waters to swim, snorkel, scuba dive, fish, surf, or kayak. Just remember to bring plenty of water and sun block since corner stores are not always around in Baja, Mexico. The key to enjoying the waters around Baja, Mexico is to understand the basics of Baja beaches.

The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes surround the Mexican peninsula known as Baja. People familiar with these waters will tell you that swimming on the Pacific side can be dangerous. The Pacific waters hide strong undertows, swift currents, and boast powerful waves. With no lifeguards on duty at most beaches, or even hotel pools, Baja swimmers are left to their own judgment when deciding to swim. If swimming is your goal, then heading over to beaches located on the Sea of Cortez is your best bet. These waters are calmer and offer safer swimming conditions. However, do not let rough waters turn you away from the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean side of Baja, Mexico offers beaches like the La Playita or little beach. This is a great beach to watch local fisherman reel in their catch of the day. Many of these fisherman are fourth or fifth generation anglers. Observing these local fisherman is taking in a part of Mexican culture. This side of Baja also offers some small islands that you can boat to and you may find prime swimming conditions. Todos Santos Islands are a perfect example of the sort of place that offers more tranquil waters. Estero Beach, a little south of Ensenada, is a great place for the family to enjoy beach activities. This beach is actually located on an estuary and boasts a fabulous boardwalk and volleyball playing area.

The best swimming though is found on the Sea of Cortez side of Baja, Mexico. Here is where you will find Rosarito Beach, which is a hustle and bustle of families, couples, and locals enjoying the beach life. The majority of activity takes place near the Rosarito Beach Hotel. Medano Beach is another popular beach with safe swimming and tons of tourist offerings. Local sellers will hock their wares to you while you sunbathe selling everything from hats to handmade crafts. Medano houses bars, restaurants, and hotels along its coastline. This beach is known as the party beach and is a great place to see and be seen while in Baja.

Playa La Paz is another great beach for swimming and activities. Located along the Malecon in La Paz, Playa La Paz is clean and convenient. The Malecon is like the life center in La Paz, so a trip to Playa La Paz does not take you very far from things to see and do in La Paz. With such a variety of beaches available, it may require more than one trip to Baja to see them all. Just remember, the best thing about Mexican beaches is that they are all public. So do not be deterred by a large hotel sitting on an immaculate beach. As long as you respect private property, all beaches are fair game. Finding a private path to them is the challenge.

Visiting Boston Common

Post image for Visiting Boston Common

Covering almost fifty acres of Boston’s land, The Boston Common, has seen much of our country’s history take place on its beaustiful green feilds. This park is the oldest in our country, it marks the beginning of the famous Freedom Trail. It is now the main point of what is known as the Emerald Necklace. The Emerald Necklace is a chain of beautiful parks weiving in and out of Boston’s city and neighborhoods. Theses parks are homes to some of the most beautiful trees and shrubbery, especially during the fall, when their leaves turn into such a variety of colors it almost looks fake. It almost has the feel of Central Park in New York City with so much green surrounded by tall city sky scrappers reflecting the glow of the sun on their glasssy sides. It truly is a beautiful site to see.

Talk about history! The Boston Common began as a pasture for cattle back in 1634. However, this was not its only purpose. It was also home of many public hangings until the year of 1817. Thirteen years later, in 1830, cattle was prohibited from graizing on the feilds of the park. Ever since, it has been a public park used for a variety of recreational events and home to many historical sites and monuments. Along with all theses sites to see is one of Boston’s oldest graveyards, The Central Burrying Ground, which is the resting ground for many soldiers whose lives were taken during the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. Lets not forget about the Freedom Trail, as mentioned earlier. It is a two and a half mile trail that visits the home of sixteen different historical sites, starting at The Boston Common and ending at The Bunker Hill Monument.

The combination of history, beauty and being surrounded by Boston’s city make The Boston Common a site like no other. Seeing a place that has been a plot for much of the history you read about in textbooks through school has a certain significance of its own to it. Visit the Boston Common, you will feel as if you have gained much more than just an experience.

Poor Epcot. It is the one Disney amusement park that has gotten labeled as the “boring” park. Kids, even many adults can't seem to find the thrill and the enjoyment in it. Well, that view just isn't true. Epcot is one of the most interesting and fun of all of Disney's parks. Admittedly, it is a different type of fun. While there aren't as many thrill rides as the other parks, — not even Animal Kingdom, which if you aren't all that into animals of the African savanna, Animal Kingdom can be a pretty uninteresting park for some.

The key to enjoying each of Disney's parks is to see it from the point of view of its creators. Disney parks include many great rides, but a thrill park isn't always their goal. If it were, all of Disney's parks would just be different versions of Six Flag parks except theirs' would be cleaner and have better decorating. No, Disney makes a definite statement and takes us on a completely different adventure with every park it creates. Their eye for detail and authenticity allows the visitor to immerse himself or herself into the theme if they only let themselves.

The name Epcot stands for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”. That was Walt Disney's concept. To have a park that was similar to the World's Fair, but have it be on display continuously. Epcot is the place to showcase all of the technological advances and what the future holds in these fields. Mr. Disney also wanted this to be the think tank for experts and companies to develop future communities.

Epcot is shaped like a giant figure eight. The first circle area that you enter is called Future World. This is where you will find information about technological and scientific advancements. The area is “made more fun” with rides and entertainment such as “The Seas with Nemo and Friends”, “Honey I Shrunk The Audience”, “Mission Space”, and “Test Track”. All of these rides and shows manage to teach while entertaining the guest at the same time.

The top circle of the figure eight is called World Showcase. This circle looks like a giant doughnut from an aerial view because the center of the circle is a giant lagoon or lake with a large globe in the center. This is where the nightly fireworks show will originate from every evening just before closing. Around the lake are representations of many other countries from around the world. Each pavilion offers an authentic look into the customs, the speech, and the tastes of that country. Each country is employed with people from the actual country, who can answer your questions and make you almost feel that you really are on the other side of the world.

One way to enjoy the World Showcase even more than just shopping, eating and viewing the occasional informative movie or ride, is to take the time to view the shows and the customs of the “native” people and to become friendly and talk to the representatives. At all of the gift shops around Epcot, you can purchase a passport book for yourself or your children. Each country has a passport station where the children (of any age) can partake in a craft of that country and have their passport stamped. One year, before our son was born, we purchased an autograph book instead. Then we went to every passport station, completed the craft as we spoke to that country's representative. We always took a picture of them or of all three of us and our crafty work to put in the book later and had them write a message in their native language to us. (We always had them translate what they wrote, which we jotted down on the opposite page.) Each person we met was nicer than the one before and almost all of the messages reminded us of the humor that everyone had. Well, almost everyone. The lady in China didn't speak English at all and jotted down a Chinese symbol, which we eventually had translated. It said, “Go luck.” Go luck? Not, “Go with luck” or “Go and be lucky”, just “Go Luck”. Actually, “China” has become our fondest and funniest memory of all.
